Creando Raices is an exciting learning community at Humboldt State University dedicated to exploring community organizing, education, and Ethnic Studies. Creando Raíces is a one of a kind program offering a chance to learn with people who share your passion for Ethnic Studies. As part of this program, you will take handpicked general education courses and participate in activities that highlight all the various issues related to Ethnic Studies--a field of study that resulted from more than 50 years of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) student and community organizing—a movement that demanded our education system offer classes that center our identities, histories, and lived experiences as they intersect with race, class, gender, and sexuality.

Creando Raíces: Learning what community means

Why be a part of Creando Raices?

  1. Instant connections. Be part of a cohort of first-year students who are exploring how their values, academic preparation, and communities connect. 

  2. All Around Support. This includes other students who are learning the same concepts, a team of professors who are actively committed to social justice movements, dedicated writing tutors, peer mentors, and bilingual staff. 

  3. Community Immersion. Participate in an immersive experience for a day and a half before classes begin. You will meet your Creando Raíces community,  learn more about your cohort classes and explore the local area. 

  4. Guaranteed Classes. Along with others in Creando Raíces, you’re automatically enrolled in handpicked and specially designed courses that fulfill general education requirements and emphasize issues of Ethnic Studies. 

  5. “Creando Raíces 101”. Take a class that engages you with campus resources, develops your confidence to become a community builder, and explores your goals as a future professional.   

  6. Social Justice Engagement.  Explore how your values can change the world through hands-on, volunteer experiences in the local community.

  7. Peer Writing Support. Get connected with specially trained writing consultants, who are part of your Creando Raíces network, to help you be successful in your writing and reading assignments.

Who is this program for?

Creando Raíces gives students like you the opportunity to explore the field of Ethnic Studies (Native American Studies, African American Studies, Chican@/Latinx Studies) and issues of social justice all the while connecting back to the multiplicity of our identities. Creando Raíces is a program that stresses connection to our communities and the social movements within them. 

Creando Raíces is anchored and built by the longstanding work of HSU’s Ethnic Studies Scholars and their mutual collaboration. Creando Raíces students get to explore the hands-on work of community organizing and education that builds movements. By joining our community, you can build strong roots that will support your future learning, growth and success beyond your first year.
